Process Development

Protein production and purification processes can be complex and expensive. A research group approached us to optimise and scale up their process to increase their productivity.

Approach: The RPF team assessed their process and identified a few bottle necks to be addressed. The protein production phase was transitioned from shake flask to a controlled fermenter in fed-batch mode to achieve higher biomass . The protein purification phase was also revisited to address capacity issues and reconfigured to be suitable for larger scale operation.

Outcome: The bioreactor production yield was increased 15 times and the purification yield was increased 30 times. The outcome of this process development project resulted in an increase in the overall yield from 480µg to 230 mg of purified protein / Litre of culture (more than 450 times).
